BERLIN Antwerp

Moscow, where all roads still lead to the Kremlin. Where more billionaires live per square kilometre than anywhere else in the world. Where the mayor has the participants in the gay parade beaten up. Where everything you touch is history. Where every cliche is confirmed and denied. Where you don’t order vodka by the glass but by the gram. Moscow, a circus? BERLIN went to speak to several prominent Muscovites and recorded what they had to say in a disconcerting film document. However, this collective – with its roots in theatre – does not just simply screen the film. The audience enters a tent designed for the show. While the film is projected on moving screens, a string quartet and a pianist play Benjamin Boutreur’s soundtrack.

The Antwerp-based collective BERLIN is made up of Bart Baele, Caroline Rochlitz and Yves Degryse. In 2003, they started work on the Holocene series (which takes its name from the current geological era). The starting point for each project in the series is always a city. After researching their subject, BERLIN then selects one or more media based on the results of their research. BERLIN works with a range of actors in the artistic and academic fields, drawing on their experience to create intriguing urban portraits. The end result is then presented in Belgium or abroad, in a number of different contexts: theatres, exhibition spaces, festivals, etc.
