Mart Kangro Tallinn
Can't get no / Satisfaction
The Estonian performer Mart Kangro is not averse to radical changes. A few years ago, for instance, he said farewell to his ballet career at the National Opera of Estonia and decided to concentrate on contemporary dance. The aim of his own choreographic works is to dismantle the mechanisms of contemporary dance. In so doing he focuses mainly on the relationship between artist and public.
In Can’t get no/Satisfaction, Kangro transposes the phenomenon of stand-up comedy to dance. He examines how the performer handles the realisation that his success is directly dependent on the spectator’s laughter. This piece is a fragile and funny dance performance in which Kangro constantly moves back and forth between his artistic convictions and the critical eye of the audience.
Mart Kangro (°1974) is a widely renowned Estonian choreographer and performer. After graduating from Tallinn University he joined the National Estonian Opera for a few years. He then devoted himself to his own creations, in which he is often on stage. Kangro has already directed 8 dance productions, in which he explores the precision and clarity of movement. He collaborates frequently with German choreographers Thomas Lehmen and Christina Ciupke. He has also worked with Estonian musician and sound artist Taavi Kerikmäe, a member of the group Ansambel U. He lives and works in Tallinn. Recent projects include Longer than expected (2007), Winners vs Losers (2008) and Can’t Get No/Satisfaction (2009).
